چکیده

Contributions from the combustor to the overall propulsion noise of civilian transport aircraft are starting to become important due to turbofan design trends and expected advances in mitigation of other noise sources. During on-ground, static-engine acoustic tests, combustor noise is generally sub-dominant to other engine noise sources because of the absence of in-flight effects. Consequently, noise-source separation techniques are needed to extract combustor-noise information from the total noise signature in order to further progress. A novel four-signal source-separation method is applied to data from a static, full-scale engine test and compared to previous methods. The new method is, in a sense, a combination of twoand three-signal techniques and represents an attempt to alleviate some of the weaknesses of each of those approaches. This work is supported by the NASA Advanced Air Vehicles Program, Advanced Air Transport Technology Project, Aircraft Noise Reduction Subproject and the NASA Glenn Faculty Fellowship Program.

Separating Turbofan Engine Noise Sources Using Auto- and Cross Spectra from Four Microphones

The study of core noise from turbofan engines has becomemore important as noise from other sources such as the fan and jet were reduced. A multiple-microphone and acoustic-source modeling method to separate correlated and uncorrelated sources is discussed. The autoand cross spectra in the frequency range below 1000Hz are fitted with a noise propagation model based on a source couplet consisting...

Estimation of signal coherence threshold and concealed spectral lines applied to detection of turbofan engine combustion noise.

Combustion noise from turbofan engines has become important, as the noise from sources like the fan and jet are reduced. An aligned and un-aligned coherence technique has been developed to determine a threshold level for the coherence and thereby help to separate the coherent combustion noise source from other noise sources measured with far-field microphones. This method is compared with a sta...

An Efficient Method for Knock Signal Denoising in Spark Ignition Engine

One of the factors that affects the efficiency and lifetime of spark ignited internal combustion engine is “knock”. Knock sensor is a commonly used to detect this phenomenon. However, noise, limits detection accuracy of this sensor. In this study, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) method is introduced as a fully adaptive signal-based analysis. Then, based on weighting decomposition...

Harmonic and Broadband Separation of Noise from a Small Ducted Fan

In the study of noise from propellers and ducted fans, rigorous signal decomposition into harmonic and broadband components is essential for the development of high-fidelity predictive models. Current spectral methods and phase averaging techniques lack the temporal resolution to compensate for fluctuations in operating condition intrinsic to real world experiments. In this paper we use a Vold-...
